Shootings of High‑Profile Figures in Bulgaria Prompt Brussels Call for Urgent Action

Brussels urges Sofia to act urgently after two high‑profile killings in Bulgaria within 24 hours, highlighting concerns over organised crime in the country.

In less than 24 hours, two high‑profile figures in Bulgaria were shot dead, prompting the European Commission to call for urgent action against organised crime. On 6 April 2026, Borislav Georgiev, chief executive of the company maintaining reactors at the Kozloduy nuclear power plant, was killed in front of his home in Sofia. Shortly afterward, former bodyguard and crime writer Georgi Stoev was shot in another violent incident. The rapid succession of these murders has intensified pressure on Bulgarian authorities to address entrenched organised crime networks.
