Bulgaria Reassesses Security Amid Middle East Conflict

Bulgarian authorities hold emergency security meeting as missile strikes in the Middle East prompt risk reassessment for NATO member Bulgaria.

Caretaker Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov called for an emergency Security Council meeting after Iranian ballistic missiles were fired toward Turkey, a NATO ally, marking a broader escalation beyond a regional conflict. Zapryanov stated that the new developments fundamentally change Bulgaria’s prior threat assessment, requiring fresh analysis of risks, threats, and potential measures for national security. The Ministry of Defence plans to conduct an urgent threat analysis and involve the National Assembly in the process. Bulgarian officials stress that while the country is not a direct target, the evolving conflict in the Middle East compels Bulgaria to reassess its strategic posture within NATO and European frameworks.
