IMF staff warns of risks to Micronesia's economic growth from climate change and delayed projects

IMF staff note that FSM growth is projected to remain steady at about 1 percent in FY2026, but risks are tilted to the downside. Slow implementation of infrastructure projects, coupled with intensifying climate change effects, could depress growth, exacerbate emigration and skills shortages, and create a negative feedback loop. Additional fiscal risks come from financially weak state‑owned enterprises and the potential cost of dealing with oil spills from WWII‑era shipwrecks.
