Tajikistan's healthcare system has deteriorated since independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, with official healthcare budgets remaining extremely low (about 1.2 dollars per capita per year in the latest available data). State hospitals can no longer supply free medicines as they did before, and state pharmacies offer only limited supplies, forcing patients to rely on unlicensed vendors selling potentially unregulated drugs. The nominal right to free medical care exists, but in practice neither privatization nor state‑provided care has fully taken hold, leaving the public with inadequate and often inaccessible health services.
