Health Minister announcement of VRI outbreak in parts of Solomon Islands
An increase in viral respiratory illness cases has been detected in Honiara and Malaita, with case numbers rising sharply in sentinel facilities.
The National Public Health Surveillance Unit has detected an increase in influenza or flu-like illnesses in Honiara and Malaita, recorded at sentinel health facilities. The initial week saw 234 cases, which then surged to 803 cases the following week, representing a 243 percent increase. Significant increases were reported at Atoifi Hospital, Auki Clinic, National Referral Hospital, Kukum Clinic, and Rove Clinic. The outbreak poses elevated risk to individuals with underlying conditions such as asthma and heart disease, who are advised to seek medical care promptly if flu symptoms develop.
