Digitization of consular services via teleSign platform linked to AI and national digital ID

Ethio Telecom's teleSign platform raises potential data security and privacy concerns for consular and legal services.

A new digital consular services platform called teleSign, launched by Ethio Telecom, enables Ethiopians to grant or revoke power of attorney digitally, authenticate legal documents remotely, and access services for obtaining or renewing professional licenses without in-person visits. The platform leverages advanced technologies, including AI-powered video identity verification (liveness detection) and integration with the Fayda National Digital ID, ensuring secure authentication. However, reliance on AI and centralized digital identity systems introduces potential risks such as data breaches, unauthorized access to sensitive documents, and misuse of biometric or identity data, especially if cybersecurity and privacy safeguards are not rigorously maintained. The service is accessible through the teleSign mobile app and official website, and payments are processed via telebirr, with data stored on Ethio Telecom’s cloud infrastructure aimed at reinforcing national data sovereignty.
