Following days of torrential rains, the Paraguay River near Asunción has risen nearly 2 meters above normal levels, flooding the Cateura dump and approaching a nearby containment site for toxic residues. Environmental authorities warn that if the river continues to rise, a major environmental disaster could occur, with toxic waste potentially leaching into the river and surrounding areas. The lower house of Congress has approved an environmental emergency alert and allocated additional resources, including funding to prevent contamination, while tens of thousands of people have already been evacuated along the Paraguay and Paraná rivers.
