Portugal sees growth but faces pressure on public finances in 2026
Portugal is projected to grow near 2% in 2026 while public accounts come under pressure from fiscal expansion and an increasingly expansionary budget stance.
According to the Orçamento do Estado para 2026 (OE2026), Portugal is expected to see a slight acceleration in economic growth to around 2–2.3% in 2026, above the eurozone average. However, this growth is accompanied by significant pressure on public finances, as the government maintains an expansionary fiscal stance before the planned contraction in 2027. The Council of Public Finance and other institutions flag increased risks to public debt dynamics and fiscal sustainability, while inflation, unemployment and debt levels are all expected to trend favorably but remain sensitive to external shocks and policy implementation.
