Brazil's Congress passes controversial 'Devastation Bill' that significantly weakens environmental licensing and oversight in Brazil.
Lawmakers approved a bill that overhauls Brazil’s environmental licensing framework by allowing companies to self‑approve high‑impact projects and reducing the rigor of environmental impact assessments. The law also excludes many untitled Indigenous and quilombola lands from impact studies, opens the way for large-scale infrastructure such as highway paving in the Amazon, and is widely criticized as enabling unchecked deforestation and ecosystem degradation. The bill has been described by environmental groups as one of the worst environmental rollbacks in over four decades.
