Waterford gardaí investigating organised scams have seized €1.12 million in cryptocurrency as part of a probe into a sophisticated money‑laundering and 'smishing' operation with links to international criminal organisations. The investigation focuses on the sending of large volumes of smishing texts, theft, deception and cross‑border money‑laundering involving criminal groups operating across Europe, the UK, Dubai and South Africa. Nine men have been arrested so far, and two are before the courts charged with offences under the Criminal Justice (Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing) Act 2010, Part 7 of the Criminal Justice Act 2006, and the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act 2001.
