African dust storm causes disruptions and damage in Crete
Heavy African dust influx and severe weather have led to flight disruptions, structural damage, and coastal impacts in several locations across Crete.
An intense African dust event has spread over Crete, causing chaos at Heraklion Airport with numerous flight cancellations and stranded passengers due to poor visibility and dust‑laden conditions. High dust concentrations have been recorded in Chania and Rethymno, leading to health and operational concerns. In Ierapetra, a powerful wind event described as a local hurricane overturned a truck, while waves reached the first houses along the old town, damaging greenhouses and part of a factory wall. Local fishermen warn that the harbor is inadequately protected against such extreme weather episodes, raising ongoing environmental and safety risks.
