Oxygen depletion in Danish inner seas
Oxygen levels in several Danish inner seas have fallen to critical levels due to agricultural nitrogen runoff.
Danish researchers have found that seven Danish inner seas are suffering from severe oxygen depletion, with oxygen levels below two milligrams per litre—about a quarter of the normal level defined by Danish scientists. This condition is primarily driven by agricultural emissions of nitrogen, which enter the waterways and trigger harmful algal blooms and subsequent oxygen loss, threatening marine ecosystems and biodiversity.
