Bulgaria Is Losing EUR 68 Million over Oligarchic RES
Bulgaria faces significant financial losses due to European Commission sanctions over preferential renewable energy subsidies that are deemed illegal state aid.
Bulgaria is facing over 132 million levs in losses because the European Commission has refused to reimburse funds invested in the construction of renewable energy power plants under the Rural Development Programme. The Commission has imposed sanctions due to Bulgaria's failure to comply with EU directives, which classified the preferential pricing and guarantees given to the renewable energy sector by the National Electric Company and the Commission for Energy and Water Regulation as illegal state aid. National co-financing of another 40 million levs raises the total public detriment to over 170 million levs, creating a serious economic threat to the Bulgarian budget.
