US tariff hikes and CAFTA exclusion risk threaten Nicaraguan economy

US‑proposed tariff increases and possible CAFTA exclusion pose significant risks to Nicaragua’s export‑dependent economy.

Recent analysis indicates that Nicaragua’s economic performance, while currently robust, faces growing threats from US trade policy. The IMF highlights that Washington plans higher tariffs on some Nicaraguan goods in 2027 and 2028, applicable only to Nicaragua and not neighboring countries, which would increase pressure on exporters. Legislation under consideration in the US Congress could even seek Nicaragua’s exclusion from the CAFTA‑DR trade agreement, a move that would require consent from other member countries but would severely restrict market access. The IMF calls on Nicaragua to diversify export markets more rapidly to mitigate these risks, emphasizing that export earnings, trade relations, and remittances remain vulnerable to US ‘unilateral coercive measures’ and sanctions‑related financing constraints.
