Portugal rejects NATO military role in Strait of Hormuz crisis

Portugal announces it will not send military forces to the Strait of Hormuz amid U.S.-Iran tensions, maintaining a strictly diplomatic stance within the EU and NATO framework.

Portugal's Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel has reiterated that the country will not participate militarily in the ongoing conflict around the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking after an EU foreign ministers meeting, Rangel emphasized that Portugal supports efforts to unblock the strategic waterway and guarantee freedom of navigation, but only through political and diplomatic means. He stated that Portugal is not, and will not be, involved in the conflict, aligning with a broad EU consensus to avoid military escalation. The government insists that other member states with greater resources should lead on diplomatic initiatives, while Lisbon focuses on energy security and economic resilience at home.
