World Bank warns Pakistan’s economic outlook hinges on IMF programme and external financing

World Bank identifies major challenges to Pakistan’s economic outlook, including higher electricity tariffs and reliance on IMF and external financing.

The World Bank has highlighted that Pakistan’s macroeconomic projections depend heavily on the continuation of the IMF programme and securing additional external financing. It warns that Pakistan’s lack of trade openness is harming exports, creating an export gap of $60 billion, with $13 billion compared to China and $6 billion compared to the US. The bank cautions that policy uncertainty poses downside risks to fiscal years 2025 and 2026, and that even with improvements, output growth may remain below potential at 3.2 percent in FY26 due to tight macroeconomic policies, high inflation, policy uncertainty, and unresolved structural challenges.
