Pakistan's conflict with India, Afghanistan may escalate in 2026: report

An American think tank, the Council on Foreign Relations, has warned that Pakistan’s disputes with both India and Afghanistan could once again escalate into armed conflict in 2026. The think tank assesses the likelihood of renewed armed conflict between Pakistan and India over Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir as moderate, with significant regional impact. It also flags the risk of renewed Pakistan-Afghanistan conflict, citing resurgent cross-border militant attacks originating from the Afghan border as a trigger. The report notes that escalating violence and coercive policies in occupied Kashmir could lead to direct military clashes between Islamabad and New Delhi, raising the risk of military confrontation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. Pakistan has previously conducted precision strikes deep inside Afghanistan targeting terrorists in Kandahar province and Kabul, and despite multiple rounds of talks, both countries have failed to reach a ceasefire due to the Taliban regime’s reluctance to crack down on terrorist outfits.
