'Short term relief with a long term problem'- Ecologist bemoans increased invasive species in Domini

Increased invasive species following Hurricane Maria pose long‑term environmental threats to Dominica.

Conservation ecologist Jeanelle Brisbane reports a 50% rise in non‑native land animals since Hurricane Maria struck in 2017, including the Cuban tree frog and the stripped‑tail iguana. These species threaten endemic wildlife, biodiversity, the tourism industry, the economy, and overall environmental health. Historical invasive threats include the chytrid fungus that devastated the native mountain chicken population and the black sigatoka fungus affecting bananas and plantains, as well as invasive vines and mimosa plants colonizing local forests.
