An accident at the Zangezur Copper Molybdenum Combine in Syunik Province caused two incidents of toxic mining effluent to pollute the River Voghji. A damaged pipeline at the Arstvanik tailing dump near the village of Nerkin Geratagh leaked toxic wastewater into the river, altering its color and contaminating stretches downstream, particularly in the city of Kapan. The Nature Protection and Mineral Resources Inspectorate stated that the pipeline has been repaired and that water samples were taken to assess and mitigate damage to the river’s ecosystem. The incident is under criminal investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office of Syunik, and civil society groups have raised concerns about concealment and ongoing environmental risk.
