UNFPA warns of grave health risks for women and girls in Syria

UNFPA warns that women and girls crossing Syria face rising health risks as humanitarian funding cuts force closures of health facilities.

UNFPA has issued a warning about the grave health and protection risks facing women and girls who are crossing Syria, amid escalating conflict and deep funding cuts. Over 173,000 people were displaced in January 2026, with more than half being women and girls. Nearly 31 percent of UNFPA-supported health facilities have shut down, reducing access to maternal care, sexual and reproductive health services, and protection from gender‑based violence. The situation is further aggravated by limited access to emergency care and rising insecurity.
