U.S. submarine attack on Iranian ship off Sri Lanka coast

A United States Navy submarine sank the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena about 74 km off Sri Lanka's southern coast, killing 84 sailors and leaving 101 missing in escalating regional tensions.

On March 4, 2026, a U.S. Navy submarine torpedoed and sank the Iranian Navy frigate IRIS Dena roughly 40 nautical miles off the southern coast of Sri Lanka, within Sri Lanka's exclusive economic zone but outside its territorial waters. The attack killed at least 84 sailors from the ship's 180-member crew and left 101 others unaccounted for, while Sri Lanka's navy and air force rescued 32 survivors. Iran identified the attacking submarine as the USS Charlotte, prompting strong diplomatic reactions and accusations of violating international law. The incident has heightened regional tensions, placed Sri Lanka in a delicate geopolitical position, and raised concerns over the safety of maritime zones in the Indian Ocean as the broader Middle East conflict spreads.
