New environmental briefing on Gaza's ecological crisis

Palestinian and international experts issue fresh warning on cumulative environmental damage in Gaza, including poisoned aquifers, toxic soil and irreversible ecosystem degradation.

Environmental scientists and UN specialists convened virtually this week to brief international agencies on the worsening ecological crisis in Gaza. They highlighted that prolonged bombardment and severe infrastructure damage have contaminated key groundwater aquifers, degraded topsoil and weakened coastal ecosystems. The briefing emphasized that ongoing restrictions on aid and reconstruction are preventing effective remediation, turning what began as a humanitarian emergency into a long‑term environmental catastrophe. Researchers warn of heightened public‑health risks, including increased waterborne diseases and potential long‑term impacts on agriculture and food security across the Strip.
