Former Nepal PM arrested over deadly Gen Z protest crackdown

Nepal police arrested ex‑Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and ex‑Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak over the deadly September 2025 crackdown that killed 76 people and wounded over 2,300.

Nepal Police arrested former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak in connection with the violent September 2025 crackdown on Gen Z protests, which left 76 people dead and more than 2,300 injured. The arrests occurred shortly after a new government led by rapper‑turned‑politician Balendra Shah took office following a landslide election win by his Rastriya Swatantra Party. The Gen Z uprising, driven by youth activists protesting corruption and poor governance, had previously toppled Oli’s government and led to the appointment of interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki. Incumbent Home Minister Sudan Gurung announced the detentions on social media, stressing that the move was part of delivering justice rather than political revenge.
