New wastewater recycling plant opens in Ulaanbaatar
Mongolia inaugurates its first large-scale wastewater recycling plant in Ulaanbaatar, treating up to 50,000 cubic meters daily and recycling 18 million cubic meters annually for industrial use.
Mongolia has opened its first major wastewater recycling facility in Ulaanbaatar under the Second Compact Agreement with the U.S. Millennium Challenge Corporation. The plant treats up to 50,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day, redirecting 18 million cubic meters annually to the city’s third and fourth thermal power plants for industrial technical use such as cooling and ash removal. By replacing groundwater consumption with recycled water, the project helps conserve drinking water and reduces pressure on the Tuul River ecosystem. The $462 million Water Compact aims to strengthen Ulaanbaatar’s resilience against urbanization and water scarcity.
