Malaysia to review Nipah virus surveillance amid heightened risk

Malaysia’s Ministry of Health is reviewing its Nipah virus surveillance after issuing a risk warning in early 2026, focusing on early detection and prevention of outbreaks linked to animal contact.

The Ministry of Health Malaysia has announced a review of its Nipah virus surveillance framework following heightened regional risk and previous outbreaks tied to pig farming and fruit bat exposure. The review aims to strengthen early detection, laboratory capacity, and rapid response protocols, particularly in rural areas where human–livestock contact is frequent. Health authorities are collaborating with veterinary services and local communities to enhance awareness of symptoms and routes of transmission. The move comes after a media statement in February 2026 highlighting the need for continuous monitoring and intersectoral coordination to prevent large‑scale spillover into human populations.
