Japan GDP growth forecast revised higher for 2026
A major Japanese think tank has upgraded its 2026 GDP growth forecast for Japan to 0.8%, citing stronger business investment and positive export and wage trends.
Dai‑ichi Life Research Institute raised its fiscal 2026 GDP growth projection for Japan to +0.8% from +0.9% in its March 2026 outlook, while keeping calendar‑year 2026 growth at +0.7%. The revision reflects firmer business investment, a gradual export recovery supported by U.S. demand, and stabilizing inflation that is allowing real wages to turn positive. The institute also expects stronger underlying momentum in final demand excluding inventory effects, helping to offset a previous contraction in late 2025. Overall, Japan’s economy is seen on a moderate recovery path through 2026–2027, though labor shortages and wage pressures remain key risks.
