Tokyo issues rare second flu alert in same season
Tokyo Metropolitan Government has reinstated a flu alert after a sharp rise in cases across nine designated areas, affecting over 37% of Tokyo's population.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced that influenza cases surged in the week of January 26 to February 1, prompting the city to issue a second flu alert within the same season. The alert is triggered when more than 30 cases are recorded at designated medical institutions and over 30 percent of Tokyo's population resides in affected areas. In the latest data, nine out of 31 designated areas exceeded the threshold, covering 37.16 percent of the population. Health authorities are urging residents to observe preventive measures such as hand hygiene, mask‑wearing, and staying home if symptomatic, particularly to protect vulnerable groups including the elderly and young children.
