Japan Detects High PFAS Levels in Water Nationwide

Japan’s Environment Ministry reports hundreds of water monitoring sites across 26 prefectures exceeded PFAS limits, with some readings thousands of times above the national standard.

A nationwide water quality survey conducted from April 2024 through March 2025 found that per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) levels exceeded national safety limits at 629 monitoring points across 26 prefectures. The survey covered 3,941 locations including rivers, lakes, coastal waters and groundwater. The highest recorded value was 73,000 nanograms per liter in groundwater in Kumatori Town, Osaka Prefecture, roughly 1,460 times the national limit, while another site in Okayama recorded 72,000 nanograms per liter in river water. PFAS are persistent industrial chemicals linked to long‑term health risks, prompting calls for stricter monitoring and regulation.
