In a response to the ongoing conflict with Iran, Israel’s Finance Ministry has revised the 2026 budget framework, lifting the deficit ceiling from 3.9% to 5.1% of GDP. The government simultaneously approved an additional 32 billion shekels (about $10.3 billion) in defense expenditures and reserved a further 12.8 billion shekels if hostilities persist at high intensity. The move reflects growing fiscal pressure from large‑scale reserve mobilizations, temporary business shutdowns, and weaker private consumption. Despite the higher deficit, policymakers emphasize that Israel’s external position remains strong, supported by robust high‑tech exports and a sizable current account surplus.
