Malta posts €229.6 million fiscal surplus in early 2026

Malta's government registered a €229.6 million surplus by end of February 2026, a strong turnaround from a €95.1 million deficit a year earlier, driven by higher recurrent revenue and stable economic

Malta’s public finances recorded a robust improvement at the start of 2026, with the National Statistics Office reporting a central government surplus of €229.6 million by the end of February. This marks a sharp reversal from the €95.1 million deficit registered during the same period last year. The improvement was underpinned by a notable rise in recurrent revenue, which reached €1.56 billion, reflecting stronger income tax receipts, higher VAT collections, and increased grants linked to sustained economic activity. At the same time, government expenditure rose to €1.33 billion, mainly due to higher social benefits, public sector wages, and operational costs, as well as additional investment in infrastructure, digitalisation, and environmental projects. Despite the surplus, central government debt continued to climb to €11.4 billion, underscoring underlying fiscal pressures even as the economy shows resilience.
