Malta responds to Middle East escalation affecting Maltese citizens

Malta condemns Iran's strikes on Gulf states and coordinates evacuation of Maltese nationals amid heightened Middle East conflict.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ian Borg has condemned Iran’s retaliatory missile and drone attacks on Gulf states not directly involved in the conflict, urging restraint and sustained dialogue. The escalation follows large‑scale US and Israeli strikes on Iran that reportedly killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, prompting Tehran to launch strikes against Israel and several Gulf countries. Prime Minister Robert Abela has confirmed that over 130 Maltese and Gozitan citizens in the region have requested assistance to leave, as the government works to ensure their safe return. Malta has activated a 24‑hour helpline, advised citizens in affected areas to remain indoors, and pledged to uphold energy subsidies despite soaring prices. The government stresses Malta’s role as a voice for dialogue and international law while managing the domestic impact of the wider Middle East crisis.
