Colombia GDP Tracker Falls Below 2% as Industry Contracts

Colombia's ISE economic tracker grows just 1.55% year-on-year in January, dropping below 2% for the first time since February 2025, signaling weakening industrial activity amid external trade tensions

Colombia's monthly economic tracking indicator, the ISE, recorded 1.55% year-on-year growth in January 2026, marking the weakest reading since February 2025 and the first time in 11 months the index has fallen below 2%. The services sector remained in positive territory at plus 2.7%, while primary activities (agriculture and mining) contracted 2.4%, and secondary activities (manufacturing and construction) slipped 1%. Business groups attribute the industrial slowdown to the Ecuador trade war, smuggling, unfair import competition, rising production costs, and political uncertainty ahead of the May 2026 presidential elections. Analysts project Colombia's full-year 2026 GDP growth between 2.3% and 3.0%, with the Banco de la República's policy rate at 10.25% and the Fedesarrollo economic uncertainty index at multi-year highs.
