Economist warns Barbados economy faces pivotal test despite year of stability

Economist Professor Anthony Lorde warns that Barbados’ economy faces a pivotal test in 2026 despite a year of macroeconomic stability, highlighting rising gross financing needs and dependence on touri

Professor Anthony Lorde’s analysis of the 2025 Review notes that Barbados achieved a year of macroeconomic stability, with real GDP growing by 2.7 per cent, inflation at 0.7 per cent, and international reserves holding around $3 billion. However, he warns of a pivotal test ahead as gross financing needs rise sharply due to early repayments of Eurobonds and IMF obligations, increasing debt service to 12.9 per cent of GDP and placing pressure on cash flow. Lorde also cautions against over‑reliance on tourism, especially a growing dependence on the US market, which heightens exposure to shifts in US economic conditions, policy decisions, or geopolitical shocks.
