Tuvalu faces increased coastal inundation risk from sea level rise

Coastal inundation due to sea level rise is identified as the main environmental risk to Tuvalu, threatening water quality, availability, and coastal infrastructure.

Coastal inundation from sea level rise is highlighted as the primary environmental risk to Tuvalu, with current water availability and quality risks classified as major. Up to 70% of Tuvalu’s inhabitants live without adequate catchment and storage capacity to cope with long dry spells, and groundwater is generally brackish and unsafe for drinking. Saltwater intrusion is also degrading pulaka cultivation. These risks are projected to escalate to 'extreme' by 2050, endangering community health, food security, and cultural practices. Storm surges, king tides, and flooding have already damaged coastal protection infrastructure, and by 2050, 60–80% of the population could be exposed to coastal inundation under low to high emissions scenarios, risking irreversible damage to coastal defenses.
