Launching Tonga's first National Soil Strategy to combat soil degradation and strengthen agricultural productivity.

Tonga has launched its first National Soil Strategy as a major step to improve food security by strengthening soil management and supporting sustainable agriculture. The strategy addresses urgent concerns about soil degradation and weak technical capacity in soil science, which threaten long‑term agricultural productivity and land resilience. Soil scientist and former Agriculture CEO Dr. Siosiua Halavatau emphasized the need to build technical expertise in soil science to guide policy and land‑use planning.
