Somalia military court tries three men accused of high‑risk digital fraud against vulnerable trader

Military court in Somalia is prosecuting three suspects for large-scale mobile money fraud targeting a small market trader in Mogadishu.

The Somali military court is trying three individuals—Faysal Shire Dhaqane, Abdifitah Abdulkadir Abdulle, and Hassan Ahmed Aden—accused of a high‑risk digital fraud operation. They allegedly hacked into the Waafi mobile money account of a woman trader, Raho Abdulle Mohamed, selling kitchenware at Mogadishu’s Bakara Market, and siphoned approximately $10,985. Faysal Shire Dhaqane, described as a serving soldier in the Somali National Army, is named as the alleged ringleader. The victim testified in court, describing how she was manipulated by the suspects, while a money exchanger at Jubba junction confirmed converting part of the stolen funds into Somali shillings before the transaction was frozen. The case highlights use of mobile money systems for large‑scale financial crime against vulnerable informal‑sector actors.
