Lithuania stands firm against Russia, warns of no return to normal ties
Lithuania’s foreign minister says normal relations with Russia are impossible while the war in Ukraine continues, advocating sustained pressure, sanctions, and accountability.
Lithuania’s foreign minister Kęstutis Budrys stated that return to normal cooperation with Russia is impossible under current conditions, as long as Moscow continues its war against Ukraine. Speaking after a meeting with his Croatian counterpart, Budrys emphasized that sanctions must remain and even be strengthened, stressing the need for accountability for war crimes and preservation of Russia’s diplomatic isolation. Lithuania is also moving to tighten entry restrictions, including plans to bar Russian soldiers who fought in Ukraine from entering its territory, following Estonia’s lead. This hardline stance reflects Lithuania’s broader geopolitical posture as a frontline NATO and EU member facing an increasingly assertive Russia.
