IMF Projects Slow Economic Growth for Federated States of Micronesia in 2026

IMF forecasts indicate modest 1 percent GDP growth for Micronesia in 2026 amid narrowing fiscal surplus and climate‑related risks.

The International Monetary Fund projects that Federated States of Micronesia will see steady but low economic growth of about 1 percent of GDP in 2026, supported by a gradual increase in Compact‑funded public investment. The fiscal surplus has narrowed as revenues normalize after prior windfall gains and states increase spending in response to higher fishing‑fee revenues. Public debt is low at around 9.6 percent of GDP, but the country faces downside risks from slow infrastructure project implementation, climate change impacts, financially weak state‑owned enterprises, and costs tied to oil spills from World War II‑era shipwrecks. The IMF stresses that the renewal of the Compact with the United States, with expanded grants, offers an opportunity to reset Micronesia’s economic trajectory if accompanied by reforms and faster climate‑resilient public investment.
