Guinea-Bissau remains in a fragile political state following a November 2025 military seizure of power that interrupted a presidential election. The military consolidated its position, installing coup leader Major-General Horta Inta-a as interim president for a one‑year transition and appointing a government largely composed of allies of the ousted president. Regional bodies such as ECOWAS and the African Union have condemned the takeover as an unconstitutional change of government, suspended Guinea‑Bissau from their activities, and demanded a swift restoration of constitutional order and completion of the electoral process. The Peace and Security Council of the African Union has further warned that targeted punitive measures and sanctions may be imposed on peace spoilers if constitutional order is not restored.
