Large Criminal Activity

Comoros crime and organized activity threat update

General increase in criminal activity and organized crime in Comoros, with emphasis on trafficking and smuggling networks.

Recent assessments indicate that crime in Comoros has increased over the past year across the islands of Grand Comore, Mohéli, and Anjouan. Criminal activity is largely focused on petty offenses such as pickpocketing and theft of opportunity, but there is also a growing presence of organized crime networks involved in human trafficking, child labor exploitation, drug trafficking, and smuggling. The country is particularly vulnerable to transnational trafficking due to inadequately controlled borders, corruption, and involvement of international criminal actors. Comoros serves as a transit and sometimes destination country for trafficking victims, and local fishermen are often employed by smuggling networks targeting Mayotte. The growth of the domestic drug market has also allowed local criminal networks to expand and profit.
