Flooding and cholera risk in Benin from heavy rains

Unseasonably heavy rains have caused widespread flooding in Benin, submerging two‑thirds of the country’s territory and raising fears of a cholera epidemic.

Heavy and unseasonable rainfall has caused major rivers such as the Ouémé and Mono to overflow, leading to extensive flooding across large parts of Benin. The flooding has killed at least 43 people and left nearly 100,000 homeless, inundating homes, roads, and agricultural land. The stagnating floodwaters have also created conditions conducive to waterborne disease; over 800 suspected cholera cases have been reported, and health workers warn of a potential cholera outbreak if contaminated water and sanitation problems are not urgently addressed.
