Measles outbreak detected in Latvia

Latvia has confirmed its first measles outbreak since 2018, with five cases reported and more than 800 contacts identified, prompting public health authorities to issue infection-control measures.

Latvia has registered its first measles outbreak since 2018, with five cases reported as of March 17, including three laboratory-confirmed infections among schoolchildren and one adult, plus two suspected pediatric cases still under testing. All cases are epidemiologically linked, and public health authorities estimate at least 800 contacts, including students, family members, and attendees of mass events. The outbreak is being traced back to possible exposure at the "Ļutauras viktorinas" public event in Riga on February 21–22. The risk of further spread is considered high, especially among unvaccinated individuals, and the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control is coordinating contact tracing, vaccination assessments, and infection-control measures. Authorities warn that unrecognized random contacts in public places may complicate containment efforts.
