Uruguay’s 2025 Growth Falls Short of Forecasts
Uruguay’s economy grew 1.8% in 2025, missing official targets and leading to revised expectations for 2026 growth amid weaker external demand and fiscal concerns.
New data released by Uruguay’s Central Bank show the economy expanded 1.8% in 2025, substantially below the 2.6% budget forecast and the 2.5% IMF estimate. Manufacturing led growth, aided by return of the ANCAP refinery and strong food output, while construction and energy contracted. Commerce, lodging, and finance posted modest gains. Economy Minister Gabriel Oddone acknowledged the slowdown and signaled a likely downward revision of the 2026 growth outlook from 2.2%, with analysts now expecting 1.6%. The softer performance is attributed to weaker regional demand, tax adjustments, competitiveness issues, and tight monetary policy.
