Uruguay has declared a nationwide sanitary emergency following the detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5) in wild birds in the departments of Maldonado, Rocha and Canelones. The Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries imposed restrictions on the movement of birds, suspended poultry fairs and events, and strengthened biosecurity regulations across the country. The emergency aims to contain the spread of the virus to commercial flocks and protect Uruguay's poultry exports, which are economically critical.
