First chikungunya case recorded in Saint Lucia since 2021

Saint Lucia’s Ministry of Health has confirmed its first laboratory‑confirmed chikungunya virus case since 2021, prompting enhanced surveillance and mosquito control measures across the island.

Saint Lucia’s Ministry of Health, Wellness and Nutrition has confirmed the island’s first laboratory‑confirmed chikungunya virus (CHIKV) case since 2021. The infected individual was hospitalized for four days, received supportive care, and has since been discharged in stable condition. Public health teams are actively investigating and implementing measures to prevent further spread, including intensified surveillance and vector control operations to reduce mosquito populations in affected areas. Health authorities note that the Aedes mosquito, which also transmits dengue and Zika, remains present in Saint Lucia, keeping the risk of additional cases high. The ministry advises residents to eliminate standing water, safely store water, and adopt personal protective measures such as repellent and protective clothing.
