Lima Explosion Linked to Extortion Gang Rivalry

A powerful explosion in Lima's La Victoria district injured dozens and damaged dozens of homes, with authorities suggesting it may be connected to organized crime and extortion gangs operating in the

Across Lima's densely populated La Victoria district, a massive explosion rocked a residential street late Wednesday night, blowing apart several buildings and injuring at least 17 people. The blast flattened at least four homes and left dozens more partially collapsed, according to local emergency services. Witnesses described a sudden fireball and concussion that shattered windows several blocks away. Peruvian Interior Minister Carlos Malaver said the target and method resemble bomb attacks previously used by extortion gangs to intimidate businesses and rival groups. The district has seen a surge in grenade attacks and contract killings linked to organized crime in recent months, prompting the government to deploy additional police and military units. Investigators are treating the scene as a possible organized crime bombing rather than an accident.
