A major fire at the Puma Energy oil refinery in Puerto Sandino, on Nicaragua's Pacific coast, has triggered a substantial oil spill that is contaminating nearby coastal ecosystems. The blaze started when a large fuel tank exploded at the facility, one of the country's key refining sites, and quickly spread to a second tank. Oil from the spill has coated portions of the shoreline and surrounding vegetation, threatening nesting beaches for sea turtles and vital coastal fisheries.
