Pemex Olmeca Refinery Fire and Oil Spill in Tabasco

An explosion and fire at Pemex's Olmeca refinery in southern Tabasco state caused five deaths and an oil spill that threatens coastal ecosystems, wildlife, and local fishing livelihoods.

On March 17, 2026, an explosion at Pemex’s Olmeca refinery near Puerto Ceiba, Tabasco, triggered a fire after oily water overflowed from the facility and ignited when a vehicle passed by. The blast killed five people and raised major environmental concerns as fuel spilled into surrounding waterways. Local residents and fishermen report damage to coastal ecosystems, including mangroves and fish habitats that are critical to their livelihoods. Pemex said it has removed hundreds of cubic meters of fossil fuels and deployed containment measures, but the long-term impact on marine life and water quality remains uncertain. Environmental advocates warn the incident underscores risks from the state oil company’s expansion projects along Mexico’s Gulf coast.
