Haiti: Gangs tighten grip on Haiti despite more aggressive policing

Gangs expand control in Haiti amid escalating violence, UN reports, while security forces intensify drone and ground operations, raising concerns over civilian casualties and human rights violations.

Recent UN reporting indicates that criminal gangs in Haiti are expanding their operational reach, controlling key sea and road routes and intensifying extortion, kidnapping, and attacks against civilians. Between January 2025 and March 2026, over 5,500 people have been killed and more than 2,600 injured, with the majority of casualties occurring during anti-gang security operations involving drones and raids. Haitian National Police, supported by international actors and private military contractors, have escalated strikes targeting gang leaders and strongholds, but these operations face accusations of disproportionate force and unlawful killings. The evolving conflict underscores a deepening humanitarian and security crisis as gangs consolidate territorial control while the transitional government struggles to restore order.
