Regulatory setback for environmental oversight in El Salvador

Salvadoran authorities have limited the powers of a key environmental watchdog group tasked with monitoring water quality and mining impacts, raising alarms among local activists and scientists.

Recent moves by the Salvadoran government have curtailed the operational and investigative authority of environmental oversight bodies, particularly those focused on monitoring water pollution and metal‑mining activities. Environmental advocates argue that these changes reduce transparency and public oversight of projects that could threaten river basins, including the Lempa River, which supplies much of the country’s freshwater. Civil society groups report that the decision was made with little public consultation and amid broader institutional reforms that consolidate control over environmental governance. Scientists warn that weakened oversight could exacerbate existing contamination problems in already stressed watersheds and may hinder efforts to enforce previously established protections.
